I have had the very same problem. We bought my husband an iPhone 6s on December 22, 2015 and SUPPOSEDLY got our daughter an iPhone 6s free in doing so because we activated a new line for her. When we got them, we were informed we would begin receiving credits for our daughter's phone on our bill after 3 months. Well, we have received 7 bills since then and have YET to receive a credit. I have called AT&T 4 times now and have notes from each conversation with them. I have been given every excuse in the book about why we haven't received a credit. The last couple of times I spoke to someone, they told me the gentleman who sold us the phones put us on the wrong plan. That is not our problem, and the AT&T representatives told us that. They told me they would correct the problem and we would receive a credit on our next bill. I just received an email saying our bill was ready and when I looked at it, we STILL don't have a credit. I have threatened to switch to Verizon and I am more than ready to do so. From what I understand, their service is much better in our area anyway. We never would have gotten our daughter the phone and we certainly wouldn't have activated a new line if we knew this would happen. If it was just a few dollars, I wouldn't care, but $650 is a BIG deal. We have been EXTREMELY loyal customers and pay our bills well before the deadline; however, we will not pay another dime to AT&T unless this matter is resolved immediately. Furthermore, we will discourage everyone we know from using AT&T as his or her carrier.

AT&T deals are especially good if you're adding new lines, trading in, or switching carriers. With these offers, you can often save hundreds of dollars of the retail price of a new phone, and sometimes you can even get the phone for free. AT&T might not have quite the coverage Verizon does, but with these discounts and the generally cheaper pricing of its plans, your savings can start to add up.

Apple iPhone 14 & 14 Plus: up to $800 off with trade-in and unlimited plan at AT&T (opens in new tab)AT&T's deals on the iPhone 14 offer the usual trade-in rebate of up to $800 this week - essentially the standard rate offered on the device since launch. While not the most exciting offer, this rebate is in fact enough to get the standard device for free if your old device is valued highly enough. Bear in mind, however, that you will need to be getting a new device on an unlimited data plan to be eligible here. These can be pretty pricey (like $80 per month), so it's definitely worth lining up a trade-in for a respectable discount. See this same deal on the iPhone 14 Plus (opens in new tab).

At any given time, you can walk into a wireless carrier's retail store or visit its website and see countless free phone promotions. As we just saw with the launch of the iPhone 13 lineup and Apple including carrier deals on its own website, even the iPhone maker is getting more aggressive with supporting carrier smartphone promotions.

One question always comes up with promotions like this: Are free smartphones really free? Let's take a closer look at what's often required by carriers in order to qualify for a promotion, and in most cases, what that ends up costing you.

Trading in your current phone is a key part of nearly every free smartphone deal. But not all phones are treated equally when it comes to overall value. It makes sense that a Samsung Galaxy S10 doesn't hold the same value as a Galaxy S21 Ultra.

But that's one of the "gotchas" with the current landscape of smartphone promotions. The free-phone-deals are advertised as a best case scenario. Meaning, with a trade-in that brings in the maximum value.

AT&T's current promotions allow you to sign up for any unlimited plan, with prices starting at $75 per month for a single line. T-Mobile currently has a promotion for a free iPhone 13 Pro with an eligible trade-in, and when you sign up for its $85 per month Magenta Max plan.

If you meet the trade-in and unlimited plan requirements, the final aspect of most free phone promotions is that the cost of the device is credited to your account over a set amount of time. For example, AT&T currently lists the 128GB iPhone 13 as free with a trade-in and unlimited plan. The cost of the iPhone 13 is broken down into monthly payments of $22.23 over the course of 36 months (36 x $22.23 = $800.28).

Carriers often have some sort of promotion that includes two phones. The first you pay for on a monthly payment plan, and the second you get for free when you add a new line of service to your account.

One such option is the various companies are bundling a free Apple TV+ subscription with their services. For example, there is the option to get a free year subscription to Apple TV+ with T-Mobile (if you live in the US), you can also get six months free Apple TV+ with a PlayStation 5 or three months with PlayStation 4.
