The Plot of Tanu Weds Manu Returns
The movie begins four years after the events of Tanu Weds Manu, where Tanu and Manu got married in a traditional ceremony in Kanpur. However, their marriage has hit a rough patch and they are constantly fighting and bickering. They visit a mental asylum in London to seek counselling, but end up getting into a heated argument that leads to Manu being forcibly admitted by the doctors. Tanu is enraged and decides to leave Manu and return to India.
Back in Kanpur, Tanu reverts to her old self and starts living with her parents. She reconnects with her old friends and admirers, including Raja Awasthi (Jimmy Sheirgill), her ex-fiance who is still obsessed with her and wants to marry her. She also meets Chintu (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), a law student who rents a room in her house and falls in love with her. Tanu enjoys the attention and flirts with both of them, but is still not over Manu.
Meanwhile, Manu is released from the asylum with the help of his loyal friend Pappi Kutti (Deepak Dobriyal) and returns to India as well. He goes to Delhi to attend the wedding of his friend Jassi Singh Gill (Eijaz Khan) and his wife Payal Gill (Swara Bhaskar), who are also friends with Tanu. There, he meets Kusum Sangwan (Kangana Ranaut), a young Haryanvi athlete who looks exactly like Tanu but has a completely different personality. She is bold, confident, independent, and sporty. Manu is instantly attracted to her and proposes to her after a few days of courtship. Kusum agrees on the condition that he divorces Tanu first.
However, things get complicated when Tanu finds out about Manu's engagement with Kusum and feels jealous. She decides to crash the wedding and stop it. She also brings along Raja and Chintu to create more chaos. A series of hilarious and dramatic events ensue as Tanu tries to win back Manu, Kusum tries to stand up for herself, Raja tries to kidnap Tanu, Chintu tries to expose Kusum's identity, Pappi tries to save the day, and Jassi and Payal try to cope with their own marital problems.
