Summary
The movie is set in the Empire of Izmer, a divided land where an elite group of sorcerers known as The Mages rule over the commoners. The Empress of Izmer, Savina (Sophia Lillis), fights for equality and prosperity among all citizens, but she faces opposition from the wicked and powerful Mage Profion (Hugh Grant), who plots to overthrow her throne. Profion seeks to obtain the Rod of Savrille, a magical artifact that can control the Red Dragons, the most fearsome creatures in the land.
To stop Profion's scheme, Savina hires two petty thieves, Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), who claim to know the location of the Rod. They are joined by Xenk (Regé-Jean Page), a charismatic bard who has a hidden agenda; Simon (Justice Smith), a young mage apprentice who idolizes Savina; Doric (Daisy Head), a rogue elf who has a personal vendetta against Profion; and Kira (Chloe Coleman), a precocious girl who has a mysterious connection to the Rod. Together, they must outwit Profion's chief henchman Damodar (Spencer Wilding), who is hot on their trail, and find the Rod before it falls into the wrong hands.
Analysis
Acting
One of the strengths of this movie is its cast, which consists of both seasoned actors and rising stars. Chris Pine delivers a charming and charismatic performance as Edgin, the leader of the group. He has great chemistry with Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Holga, his partner in crime and love interest. Rodriguez brings humor and toughness to her role as a street-smart thief who can handle herself in a fight. Regé-Jean Page also shines as Xenk, a smooth-talking bard who has a secret identity. He adds some mystery and intrigue to the story with his hidden motives and backstory.
The young actors also do a great job in their roles. Sophia Lillis portrays Savina as a strong and compassionate leader who wants to bring peace and justice to her people. She shows courage and determination in facing Profion's threats and challenges. Justice Smith plays Simon, a naive and loyal mage apprentice who learns to use his magic for good. He provides some comic relief with his awkwardness and enthusiasm. Chloe Coleman is adorable as Kira, a girl who has a special bond with the Rod. She shows maturity and intelligence beyond her years.
The villains are also well-cast. Hugh Grant plays Profion as a cunning and ruthless sorcerer who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
