[S9E1] Time Flies

On May 19, 2020, Fox renewed Last Man Standing for a ninth season.[24] On October 14, 2020, it was announced that the season would be the final one of the series.[1] The season takes place in 2023, so that it doesn't have to be during the COVID-19 pandemic, although it will still address how the pandemic impacted the characters.[25] The time jump also allows the babies that the Kristin and Mandy characters were pregnant with at the close of season 8 to be presented as three-year old toddlers. The premiere was originally planned to be the unfinished finale from the eighth season, however due to the fact that most of it would have to be rewritten, and that planned guest-star Kaitlyn Dever was unavailable, the producers instead decided to write a new episode.[26]

On November 10, 2020, it was announced that the season would have a special premiere on January 3, 2021, before moving to its regular timeslot on January 7, 2021.[31] On December 22, 2020, it was announced that the season would premiere an hour later than originally planned on January 3, 2021, to make room for the series premiere of The Great North.[32]

On their way back from the islands, Finn, Jake, and BMO are going through their giant supply of bananas. BMO comments on a mysterious cloud that is following them, but Jake says to pay it no mind, and instead asks for a bedtime story. BMO starts to recite one, and the two fall asleep. Joining them, BMO makes a bed out of cloth and says goodnight to them both. Right before going into sleep mode, the cloud evaporates and reveals a mysterious orb.

Prior to broadcast, series creator Shonda Rhimes did not release much information about the season premiere.[8] However, it was revealed prior to broadcast that there would be a time jump in the episode.[9] After it was announced that Dane would be departing shortly after the commencement of the ninth season,[10] Dempsey uploaded a set picture on Twitter of Sloan in bad condition. Due to the unwanted release of spoilers, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) requested that he delete the photo, and it was subsequently removed.[11] The cast and crew of Grey's Anatomy were being particularly quiet about the fate of Capshaw's character.[12] This secrecy was compromised when McKidd posted a picture on his Twitter account of the editing room, in which there was a picture of Robbins alive on the screen. The picture has since been taken down.[13]

The International Business Times' Arlene Paredes concluded that the episode "raised the bar for deeply emotional yet again", and noted that it was "one of the most high-anticipated TV [returns] this fall".[30] TVLine's Michael Ausiello opined that the attempt to hide Robbins' fate was the "worst kept secret in TV land".[31] Writing for AfterEllen, Bridget McManus threatened to boycott the show if Capshaw's character was killed, but thought the FaceTime calls between Yang and Meredith Grey were humorous.[32] Mark A. Perigard of the Boston Herald was critical of the time it took to rescue the doctors, and deemed the flashbacks featuring Sloan "unconvincing".[33] Zap2it's Carina Adly MacKenzie opined that it "became increasingly clear" that Sloan would die as the episode progressed, and praised Capshaw's performance, noting that it was "brief but truly striking".[34]

In season eight, Iris suffered from a time sickness that brought back Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh). At the end of season eight, Flash and Reverse Flash faced off with the powers of the positive and negative speed forces. The Flash prevailed and there seemed to be no sign of the Reverse Flash on the timeline. And Iris was cured of her time sickness.

Barry is up early, ready to catch Boomerang. He looks at the map book to see what happens that day and gets excited. Iris is not ready for his energy and asks him to take a shower before talking about the future. Iris goes to work and has the same conversation with Allegra that she had the day before. She quickly figures out that something is different and thinks Barry did something to the timeline.

The next day, the couple wakes up to another Wednesday. This time, they plan to have some fun. First they go to CCC media to address the CatCo offer. Iris decides to expand her media footprint, in her own way. She reached out to Sue Dearbon (Natalie Dreyfuss), who agreed to give Iris a loan to buy the Coast City Gazette.

Mercer goes to a warehouse to deliver the power source. He is gifted with a case full of new boomerangs. He asks what the next move is. A scary deep voice says not what, who. A shadow appears with red lightning swirling around them. They say the Flash is never alone, but when they are done with him, he will be. The shadow flies into the air and toward the camera and transforms into a bat-like figure.

Adventure Time has always embraced a psychoanalytic understanding of dreams that straddles the Freud-Jung divide: these reveries reveal hidden or repressed wishes/beliefs (as Freud postulated), but at the same time they are not necessarily psycho-sexual, nor are they restricted simply to the individual unconsciousness (as per Jung). Dreams in the Adventure Time world tell us much about the characters who are having them, as well as the world they live in.

Clark has been training with Jor-El for weeks and tells him he's tired of simple mental trials and wants to completely immerse himself in his Kryptonian training, but Jor-El sends him back to Metropolis to cut ties with Lois before he can begin. Chloe is shocked when Lois suddenly reappears after having been missing for weeks, but Lois has no recollection of vanishing into thin air with the Legion ring. While investigating a monorail crash, Lois meets John Corben, a new reporter at the Daily Planet with a negative attitude toward the Red-Blue Blur. Chloe begs Clark to use the Legion ring to go back in time to save Jimmy, but he refuses, driving a wedge into their friendship. Meanwhile, Oliver continues down a dark road, and Zod arrives at the Luthor Mansion.

It is night time in Metropolis three weeks after Doomsday's rampage on main street. Chloe Sullivan has taken up residence in the Watchtower and is arguing with an uncooperative woman on her cell phone, trying to find a lead to the mysterious disappearance of her cousin Lois Lane. Feeling she isn't getting the help she's looking for, Chloe hacks into their computer system. Suddenly, she hears a noise coming from the elevator entrance to the tower and pulls out a gun. Chloe walks to the balcony railing and, seeing a figure in the shadows, threatens to shoot. Then Emil Hamilton appears, requesting that she put down her gun. Chloe enquires if Oliver sent him to help in her search, but he says that Oliver, Dinah and Bart have all vanished off the grid, blaming themselves for Jimmy's death. Chloe says that in that case it's up to them to bring the team back together.

Meanwhile, a monorail train approaching the city is struck by a mysterious bolt of purple lightning that appears in the sky, arcs down and pierces one of the train cars. Inside, Lois Lane suddenly materializes, on her hands and knees in the aisle. She has a bandage on her left hand and the Legion ring on her right hand. Suddenly, another bolt of lighting, this time colored blue, strikes the car and a mysterious woman assassin is now transported aboard the train, who immediately attacks Lois. Lois holds her own against the assassin, but then the damage caused to the train by the bolt of lightning derails the train as it crosses a bridge over the river and it hurtles over the edge. Lois is knocked unconscious as the train plummets to the street below, where it is caught in mid-air just above the ground by Clark Kent, who is now dressed in an all-black costume with a long coat.

Clark returns to the barn with a shovel, having buried the assassin, to find Chloe waiting for him and he tells her he has one year to try and stop the destruction of the world at his own hand. Chloe pleads with Clark to use the Legion ring to travel back in time to prevent Jimmy's death but Clark says he won't tamper with fate again. Clark angrily tells Chloe that he's not a God and the last time he tried to rewrite history Jonathan Kent died in his arms. As she leaves the barn, Chloe tells Clark through her tears that he has now truly embraced his Kryptonian side as there's nothing left of his humanity.
